Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC) has introduced a new generation of vessel designs aimed at decarbonization, including a wind-assisted LNG carrier with a capacity of 175,000 cubic meters. This innovative vessel has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV).

The wind-assisted LNG carrier features a combination of LNG dual-fuel propulsion and sail-assisted technology, providing a cost-effective upgrade solution for the existing fleet of similar carriers. It is equipped with three advanced foldable wing sails made from lightweight composite materials, which can fold and rotate independently.

An intelligent monitoring and control system enhances the vessel’s efficiency by continuously gathering route-specific wind data and automatically adjusting sail angles in real-time. This design is projected to achieve over a 5% reduction in overall energy consumption on typical trading routes, translating to an annual decrease of approximately 2,900 tons in CO₂ emissions.
