Dutch maritime solar innovator Wattlab has equipped HGK Shipping’s cargo vessel Blue Marlin with a cutting-edge solar energy system. Featuring 192 solar panels, this setup allows the Blue Marlin to become the world’s first inland shipping vessel capable of hybrid sailing powered by solar energy.
HGK Shipping, a prominent European inland waterway company with a fleet of 350 vessels, transports around 43 million tons annually, establishing itself as a leader in dry bulk, gas, and chemical transport. Wattlab’s extensive experience in maritime projects enhances the significance of this innovative initiative.
The solar power system can deliver up to 35 kilowatts under optimal conditions, working alongside four diesel generators that power the electric propulsion system. This integrated approach enables "peak shaving," allowing the combination of solar energy and batteries to minimize the need for additional generators during peak demand periods.
With automated energy management, the system efficiently distributes electrical energy as needed, enhancing overall efficiency and significantly reducing fuel consumption. This project represents a significant advancement in sustainable shipping practices.
