bound4blue has successfully installed the world’s largest suction sails on the MV Atlantic Orchard, a specialized juice carrier chartered by Louis Dreyfus Company and owned by Wisby Tankers AB. The four 26-meter high eSAILs® were fitted during the vessel’s 10-year survey at Astander Shipyard in Santander, Spain, ensuring optimal efficiency. This installation allows the vessel to comply with FuelEU Maritime regulations and benefit from fuel consumption and emission savings of around 10%, providing commercial advantages.
This marks bound4blue’s third installation this year, demonstrating their ability to scale and deploy their technology. The company’s CEO, José Miguel Bermúdez, emphasizes the simplicity and versatility of adopting Wind Propulsion Systems (WPS) for various vessel types, including juice carriers. The installation process involved removing deck cranes to make room for the sails and conducting all necessary work in a single yard visit, showcasing the ease of integrating eSAILs® into existing vessels.
The decision to install WPS on the MV Atlantic Orchard followed a thorough review by LDC’s shipping decarbonization team, with Lloyd’s Register providing expert assessments of different solutions before selecting bound4blue’s system. Sébastien Landerretche, LDC’s Global Head of Freight, highlights the importance of this installation in shaping a low-carbon maritime industry and looks forward to sharing insights from the vessel’s first voyage to Brazil and back to Europe. The eSAILs® technology offers a quick payback period and is suitable for retrofitting across various vessel segments, with orders already received from major shipping companies.
