Norwegian maritime technology company Pherousa has received approvals in principle from American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and DNV for its ammonia cracking technology on ships, which includes PEM Fuel Cells and Fuel Gas Supply System (FGSS) for fully electric propulsion. This technology is being developed to enable the transition to fossil-free and zero-emission propulsion in the maritime transport sectors. Key partners in this project include Deltamarin, Marshall Islands, Babcock International Group, and Metacon.

The approval from ABS and DNV is a significant milestone for Pherousa in the development of zero-emission solutions for the maritime industry. This technology will be implemented in a series of 64,000 dwt Bulk Carriers designed for the Copper industry, ensuring the delivery of essential commodities with zero carbon footprint. Hans Bredrup, Chairman of Pherousa, emphasized the importance of using ships with no carbon fuels onboard to ensure emissions-free supply chains for products like solar panels and electric cars.

Ammonia is increasingly being considered as a hydrogen carrier for vessel propulsion, with Clean Ammonia expected to make up a significant portion of the global supply by 2030. Pherousa Shipping, a subsidiary of Pherousa, has collaborated with major copper miners to design Ultramax 64,000 dwt vessels for emission-free transportation of copper concentrates. These vessels are planned to be operational by 2030, aligning with new IMO regulations and enabling the use of fully emission-free vessels for sea transportation of goods.
