ABS has signed an agreement to acquire the MetaSHIP intellectual property and vessel simulator software from Orka Informatics, aiming to enhance its maritime training solutions. This acquisition, pending Turkish regulatory approval, will expand ABS’s digital training offerings, which can be accessed on board, in ports, or at home, as well as through high-tech learning centers in Qatar, Greece, and Singapore. The MetaSHIP platform provides an engaging gaming experience, enabling students to master vessel operations without physical onboard training.
Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman and CEO, emphasized the need for the maritime workforce to adapt to new technologies and evolving regulations. He stated that investing in advanced training is essential for fleet safety, environmental compliance, and global competitiveness. The MetaSHIP program simplifies complex maritime tasks into interactive lessons, enhancing the skills of seafarers in a rapidly changing industry.
Additionally, the acquisition includes the ODENES platform for tracking training completions and performance assessments. Campbell Smith has been appointed as Senior Vice President of ABS Training Solutions to spearhead the expansion of these innovative training programs. Smith, joining from Maersk Training, brings extensive experience in global maritime operations and strategic growth.
