Graduating cadets from the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) in Oron, Akwa Ibom, were encouraged to leverage the vast opportunities within the blue economy for the country’s development. This message was emphasized by maritime experts during the institution’s graduation lecture. Mr. Oluwafemi Oyeniran, a MAN alumnus, urged the cadets to cultivate passion and commitment towards their careers in the maritime sector, highlighting its potential to significantly enhance Nigeria’s economy if properly utilized.
Oyeniran’s presentation, titled “Exploiting and Harnessing the Resources of Marine and Blue Economy for National Development,” stressed that Nigeria’s extensive coastline of approximately 853 kilometers offers rich resources that, if effectively harnessed, could lead to increased trade, job creation, and revenue generation. He called on the cadets to recognize the wealth of opportunities available in the marine sector.
Another speaker, Mrs. Edidiong Akpanebe, reinforced the importance of capacity building in the shipping industry for sustainable growth. Her paper, “Prospects of Capacity Building and National Development,” described the maritime industry as crucial for global trade and economic connectivity. She emphasized Nigeria’s strategic position along key shipping routes as a vital asset for regional economic stability.
Dr. Kevin Okonna, Acting Rector of MAN, highlighted the institution’s commitment to integrating academic excellence with practical skills in the maritime and blue economy sectors. He noted that the event aimed to enhance the capabilities of the 200 cadets present, underscoring the significance of the blue economy in Nigeria’s economic landscape.
