The institute provides free training, paid placement, and real skills to help participants launch their careers in the marine trades. The We Float Boats! pre-employment program, which starts on May 20 in Sidney, offers a six-week introduction to the marine trades for youth aged 16 to 29 who are unemployed or underemployed. Participants receive hands-on training in boatyards, job shadowing opportunities with marine employers, and industry certifications such as Forklift Operation and Occupational First Aid.

The program aims to equip participants with practical skills in onboard systems, vessel detailing, engines, and power tools. Graduates also earn industry-recognized certifications that are valuable in the marine service industry. The institute collaborates with various maritime employers, providing participants with job shadowing opportunities and hands-on training. Many graduates receive job offers directly from the program, showcasing the demand for skilled professionals in the marine trades.

Participants gain exposure to different roles within the marine industry, ranging from mechanical and electrical work to composites and welding. Some discover a passion for boat building or repair, while others find their niche in marine electronics or operations. The program aims to connect young individuals with meaningful work opportunities in the marine industry, while also assisting employers in finding the right talent. The next session of the program runs from May 20 to June 27 in Sidney, with a Vancouver intake scheduled for July. Participants are paid minimum wage during the program.
