9 Filipinos Held by Houthi Forces
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has confirmed that nine Filipino crew members from the MV Eternity C are currently held by Houthi rebels in Yemen. During a virtual briefing on July 29, 2025, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac stated that the DMW is coordinating with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and international partners to ensure the safe release of the seafarers.
The MV Eternity C was attacked while crossing the Red Sea on July 7, leading to its sinking. Of the 21 Filipino crew members aboard, eight have returned home safely. Cacdac noted that survivors reported three fatalities, though this is still unconfirmed as no bodies have been recovered, and one crew member remains missing.
Family members of the detained seafarers have received phone calls from them, confirming their identities and indicating that they are in good physical condition. Cacdac emphasized ongoing efforts with the DFA to ascertain their well-being and secure their release.
Regarding recent Houthi threats against vessels perceived as supporting Israel, Cacdac stated that the DMW will heed guidance from the DFA and the Department of National Defense when making deployment decisions. The DMW is committed to providing support to the families of all crew members.
