A ship caught fire in the Gulf of Aden off Yemen after being struck by a projectile, according to the British military. Reports indicate that the crew may have been preparing to abandon the vessel. This incident coincides with ongoing attacks on ships by Yemen’s Houthi rebels in the Red Sea corridor. Although the Houthis have not claimed responsibility for the attack, such announcements can take hours or even days.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued an alert regarding the incident, stating it occurred approximately 210 kilometers (130 miles) east of Aden. They confirmed that a vessel had been hit by an unidentified projectile, and investigations are currently underway.

Maritime security firm Ambrey identified the ship as a Cameroon-flagged tanker traveling from Sohar, Oman, to Djibouti. They reported that radio communications indicated the crew was preparing to abandon ship, prompting a search-and-rescue operation.

The Houthis have gained international attention amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, particularly due to their attacks on shipping and Israel, which they claim are intended to pressure Israel to cease its military actions.
