Nine Filipino seafarers stranded at Yemen’s Ras Isa Port have returned to the Philippines amid escalating conflict in the region, as reported by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). The crew members of the MV Rival had been trapped at the port due to ongoing tensions between Houthi rebels and a Saudi-led coalition.
DMW officials, including Assistant Secretary Levinson Alcantara and Director Augusto B. San Diego III, welcomed the seafarers at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. The agency is providing essential support, including financial aid, temporary accommodation, and medical and psychological assistance.
Ras Isa Port has become increasingly perilous for maritime traffic due to the Yemen conflict affecting vital shipping routes. The area is now one of the most hazardous ports, marked by the presence of Houthi missile systems and retaliatory airstrikes from Western forces.
In related news, DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac will continue in his role after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declined his resignation. Cacdac expressed his commitment to serving overseas Filipino workers, stating that this renewed opportunity motivates him to dedicate himself further to their welfare.
