The International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (INTERCARGO) has raised alarms regarding the escalating security issues in the Gulf waters and the Strait of Hormuz. The organization emphasizes that the safety and welfare of seafarers should be the primary concern within the maritime industry. An emergency briefing was convened by IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez on March 11, where INTERCARGO expressed sorrow over recent attacks on bulk carriers and merchant vessels, which have resulted in tragic fatalities.

During the meeting, INTERCARGO extended condolences to the affected families and acknowledged the growing challenges faced by maritime personnel in a volatile environment. Kostas Gkonis, Secretary General of INTERCARGO, highlighted that recent assaults on merchant ships underline the serious security risks in the region. He asserted that while seafarers play a crucial role in maintaining global trade, they must not become collateral damage in geopolitical conflicts.

In light of the intensified attacks, Gkonis advised bulk carrier operators to exercise caution and conduct thorough risk assessments before navigating high-risk areas. He urged members to heed the guidance of their P&I Clubs, legal advisors, and insurers. Additionally, INTERCARGO reported that three seafarers may still be trapped following an incident in the Strait of Hormuz and expressed hope for their safe rescue.
