Two maritime deck cadets from the Solomon Islands, Selister Kedrian Tamara and Augustine Sino Teisibwebwe, have been selected for advanced training in Europe next month, marking a significant milestone for the country’s maritime sector. This opportunity is fully sponsored by a major European shipping company in collaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Captain/Dr. Teorae Kabure, Director of Solomon Islands Maritime College, announced this achievement during the International Day of the Seafarers celebration at the Maritime Campus in East Honiara. He expressed pride in the selection of the cadets, who completed their basic maritime training course in 2024.

While Dr. Kabure did not disclose the specific European university or country involved, he noted that after completing 18 months of sea time on large vessels, the cadets would qualify directly for the Class 3 Masters course, bypassing lower certification levels at the college. This initiative aims to bridge the generational gap among Solomon Islands seafarers, enhancing the nation’s maritime capabilities.
