The newly launched Whale Alert mobile app in Europe aims to prevent whale collisions by providing real-time alerts and reporting capabilities. Initially introduced in North America in 2012, the app is now available across Europe through a partnership with Greenov. Developed by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and Conserve.IO, it is free for both recreational and commercial vessels.
With over two million vessels navigating European waters annually, the risk of ship strikes on whales is significant. Experts estimate that for every reported collision, up to 20 go unreported, highlighting the urgent need for better awareness and protection measures. Aurore Morin from IFAW emphasizes the critical role of the app in empowering mariners to safeguard whales.
The latest version of Whale Alert includes features tailored for European waters, such as collision-risk indicators and guidance on local marine mammal protections. Utilizing GPS technology, the app alerts users to nearby whales, enabling them to adjust their routes accordingly. Available for free on the App Store and Google Play, Whale Alert encourages ocean enthusiasts and maritime professionals to contribute to whale conservation efforts.
