The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) revealed that Nigerian seafarers are now among the highest paid in the world, thanks to the Maritime Affiliate Support (MAS project) initiated by the International Transport Federation (ITF). During a visit by ITF Coordinator Mrs. Marie to the union’s headquarters in Lagos, it was announced that the project has led to progress in ensuring global best practices and decent work for Nigerian seafarers, with an increase in ITF agreements and membership.
The leadership of the union highlighted the benefits of the MAS project, with President-General Comrade Adewale Adeyanju emphasizing the training, retraining, and global employment opportunities that members have gained. Before the project, there was a shortage of Nigerian seafarers globally, but the MAS project has helped address this issue by fostering better understanding between seafarers and employers through Collective Bargaining Agreements.
President of the Seafarers Branch of MWUN, Comrade Sunday Avose, explained that the MAS Project aims to support Nigerian workers in the maritime sector to receive better packages from their employers. He noted that Nigerian seafarers are now among the highest paid, citing a recent Collective Bargaining Agreement with the ship management of NLNG as an example of the positive impact of the project.
