The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has initiated a six-month Structured Onboard Training Programme aimed at enhancing the employability of Indian seafarers. Launched on July 15, 2026, the program is taking place aboard the MV Swaraj Dweep, a passenger vessel managed by The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI) and owned by the Andaman & Nicobar Administration.
This initiative addresses the challenge faced by pre-sea trained youth who require mandatory onboard training to secure employment. By offering structured training for General Purpose (GP) Rating and Certificate Course in Maritime Catering (CCMC) trainees, the program seeks to bridge the gap between pre-sea training and job readiness.
Implemented by SCI in partnership with the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) and supported financially by the Maritime Training Trust (MTT), the program is designed to be comprehensive. SCI is tasked with the planning, execution, administration, and monitoring of the training.
According to MoPSW, this initiative is expected to cultivate a robust pool of skilled Indian maritime professionals, thereby generating more employment opportunities in both domestic and international shipping sectors. The program aligns with the objectives outlined in Maritime India Vision 2030, reinforcing the Ministry’s commitment to fostering sustainable employment for the youth and developing a competitive maritime workforce.
