BERG Propulsion has introduced the OpWind® software system, designed to assist crews in optimizing the operation of sails and propellers for maximum efficiency in various sea conditions. By automatically adjusting propeller pitch and speed based on a vessel’s operation data and measured parameters, OpWind ensures that engine efficiency is optimized when wind propulsion is utilized. This innovative approach results in significant fuel savings compared to traditional methods.

The OpWind system, developed from BERG Propulsion’s Dynamic Drive technology, combines theoretical information and calculations with real-time data from the vessel to identify optimal operating actions. According to Chief Technology Officer Emil Cerdier, OpWind is a more advanced system than Dynamic Drive and can be implemented on any ocean-going vessel with sails. The potential for fuel savings will vary depending on the vessel’s configuration, operating profile, and sail size, but the efficiency gains will be substantial for both newbuildings and retrofit projects.

OpWind offers several operating modes, allowing users to set parameters for maximum speed, fuel consumption, or propeller thrust. Additionally, the system can be utilized for onboard power generation while the vessel is under sail. BERG Propulsion also provides a Marine Information Display to visualize performance and optimize fuel consumption. By reducing engine propulsion power when sails contribute to forward thrust and utilizing a feathering propeller design to shut down main engines as needed, further fuel and maintenance cost savings can be achieved. An initial order for OpWind systems has already been received from a major vessel operator.
