Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Tuticorin International Container Terminal in Tamil Nadu today via a video message, calling it a “new star of India’s marine infrastructure.” He emphasized the terminal’s role in boosting the capacity of the V.O. Chidambaranar Port and supporting India’s development goals. The terminal boasts a deep draft of over 14 meters and a 300-meter-long berth, offering technical capabilities that will help reduce logistics costs and save foreign exchange for the country. Modi also praised the terminal’s focus on gender diversity, with 40% of its workforce comprised of women.
Acknowledging Tamil Nadu’s economic significance, PM Modi highlighted the state’s ports as crucial hubs for maritime trade. He mentioned the government’s substantial investment in an Outer Harbour Container Terminal, furthering port-led development in the region. Modi spoke of the V.O.C. Port’s potential in India’s maritime development, noting its recognition as a Green Hydrogen hub and a key player in offshore wind energy initiatives, showcasing India’s commitment to addressing climate change.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of innovation and collaboration in India’s growth journey, citing the country’s extensive network of roadways, highways, waterways, and airways. This connectivity positions India as a significant player in the global supply chain, further enhancing its economic potential. Modi’s address underscored the government’s commitment to advancing infrastructure and sustainability, positioning India for continued growth and development.
