The mental well-being of seafarers is a growing concern in the maritime industry, particularly for Filipino cadets. Halcyon Marine Healthcare Systems Inc. reports an increase in mental health issues among Filipino seafarers, with depression and anxiety being particularly prevalent. These psychological challenges, along with family stresses and work-related factors, can significantly impact seafarers’ overall well-being and the maritime industry as a whole. From 2019 to 2022, there has been a concerning rise in mental health disorders and suicides among seafarers worldwide.
In response to these concerns, Halcyon has launched the BrainHealth Program within their Halcyon Health app. This initiative aims to provide specialized tools to support the psychological well-being of seafarers during long voyages. The program includes features such as a Mood Tracker, Wellbeing Atlas with courses to enhance resilience, and access to Psychosocial Support Groups for peer connection and sharing. Counseling services and monthly Mental Health Talks and Webinars are also offered to help seafarers manage their mental health effectively.
Dr. Glennda Canlas, Halcyon’s medical director, emphasizes the importance of addressing the unique challenges faced by seafarers, such as isolation and extended periods away from loved ones. The BrainHealth Program is designed to provide seafarers with the necessary resources to proactively manage their mental health and access support when needed. With nearly two decades of experience in serving the maritime industry’s health needs, Halcyon Health is dedicated to providing high-quality mental and physical health interventions for seafarers.
