National Maritime Day is observed annually on May 22 to commemorate the successful Atlantic crossing of the American steamship Savannah in 1819, marking the first voyage of a steam-propelled vessel.
The event at the Lauderdale Yacht Club began with an invocation from Captain Kenny Collins, a veteran tugboat and ship docking captain. The evening featured music, comedy, and political humor, with performances by band leader Mojo Ike and comedian Mark Christopher. Florida State Senator Chip LaMarca also made remarks during the festivities, highlighting Broward County’s maritime achievements and contributions.
