Tourists from all over the world flock to Santorini, armed with selfie sticks and cellphones, to soak in the beauty of the Greek island and witness its famous sunset. However, for many of the 20,000 inhabitants of Santorini, mass tourism has ruined the once idyllic island, with its picturesque villages and pristine beaches. The increasing number of visitors is straining the infrastructure and causing housing affordability issues for locals. The island’s authorities are calling for a cap on visitors to address these challenges.

Entrepreneurs on Santorini, even those who profit from tourism, are expressing concern about the impact of mass tourism on their standard of living. Some islanders, however, see the influx of tourists as an opportunity for economic growth if planning and infrastructure are in place. Despite the challenges, tourists continue to flock to Santorini, with more expected to arrive in the coming years. The island’s tourism boom is also contributing to Greece’s overall increase in national tourism revenues.

As Santorini grapples with the effects of mass tourism, both locals and visitors are feeling the impact of the island’s popularity. While some see it as a source of income and opportunity, others worry about the environmental and social consequences. The island’s authorities are working to find a balance between preserving Santorini’s natural beauty and accommodating the growing number of tourists.
