The Maritime Cluster Northern Germany (MCN) has identified key megatrends such as digital transformation, sustainability, demographic change, and globalisation in the maritime sector. The strategic direction of the cluster’s work until 2025 has been aligned with these trends, with input from members, commerce, science, and politics. The network covers the coastal states of Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, and Schleswig-Holstein, encompassing sectors beyond shipping such as shipbuilding, maritime suppliers, ports, offshore wind farms, and universities.

Jessica Wegener, Managing Director of MCN, emphasizes the importance of competitiveness in securing jobs in the maritime sector. The cluster’s strategy development involves collaboration with various stakeholders to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the identified megatrends. By focusing on digital transformation, sustainability, and other key areas, the MCN aims to support the growth and development of the maritime industry in Germany.

The impact of the MCN’s efforts is evident in the creation of 100 jobs in the maritime sector, which have helped secure 130 additional jobs in Germany. This highlights the interconnectedness of the maritime industry with other sectors and the importance of strategic planning to ensure long-term competitiveness and sustainability. The collaboration between stakeholders in the MCN network underscores the collective effort to address challenges and leverage opportunities for growth in the maritime sector.
