MAN Energy Solutions and Svitzer have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a methanol-fuelled version of the MAN 175D engine, called the 175DF-M. The goal is to install this engine on one of Svitzer’s newbuild tugs. The next steps include finalizing details of the fuel-supply system, engine-room design, exhaust after-treatment, and engine-performance optimization.

Svitzer has already chosen the MAN 175D engine for its new TRAnsverse tugs, which started delivery in 2023. This agreement will build on Svitzer’s existing experience with the engine. Alexander Knafl, Senior Vice President at MAN Energy Solutions, expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting the potential for field-testing the newly developed MAN 175DF-M engine in Svitzer’s tug operation.

Kasper Karlsen, COO at Svitzer, also emphasized the opportunity presented by the MoU with MAN, noting the focus on gaining valuable field experience with dual-fuel methanol engines in Svitzer’s fleet. The agreement aligns with both companies’ goals and timelines, setting the stage for a close collaboration in advancing sustainable maritime solutions.
