Tamil Nadu govt inks pact with Hapag-Lloyd for setting up container terminals logistics parks
An MoU was signed between Hapag-Lloyd and officials, expecting to create 1,000 job opportunities as part of Tamil Nadu's efforts to attract investments. The Chief Minister aims to make the state a one trillion US dollar economy. The government announced a Logistics Policy 2023 and is focused on improving road infrastructure. Hapag-Lloyd has offered to invest Rs. 2,500 crore in logistic facilities.

Chief Minister M K Stalin of Tamil Nadu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hapag-Lloyd, a global transportation company, in Spain on January 31 to attract investment to Tamil Nadu. The investment is expected to create employment opportunities for 1,000 people. This is part of the Chief Minister’s efforts to make Tamil Nadu a one trillion US dollar economy by 2030.

During the visit, the Chief Minister also met with top executives of Hapag-Lloyd to highlight the investment opportunities in Tamil Nadu. The company has offered to set up logistics facilities in Thoothukudi and various parts of the state with an investment of Rs. 2,500 crore. Additionally, the Chief Minister held discussions with Laura Berjano, the International and Institutional Relations Head of Abertis, a road infrastructure development company, to improve the roadways in Tamil Nadu.

The state government is emphasizing the need for efficient freight transport to support industrial development in Tamil Nadu. Efforts to develop infrastructure, such as container ports and logistics parks, are underway at the four major ports in Tamil Nadu. A separate policy, Logistics Policy 2023, has been announced to further support this sector. The Chief Minister is seeking investments to improve road infrastructure and promote industrial development in the state, while also highlighting Tamil Nadu’s high quality road infrastructure.
