Vinod Kumar has been appointed as the new chairman of the Deendayal Port Authority, replacing SK Mehta who will step down on April 16 after completing his five-year term. Kumar, a 1994-batch Indian Postal Service (IPoS) cadre officer, has been the Chairman of the Mormugao Port Authority since April 3, 2023. He will hold charge of the Deendayal Port Authority for six months or until a full-time chairman is appointed, as per the ministry order.
The Deendayal and Mormugao ports are both operated by the Union government and are significant ports in India. Deendayal Port Authority is the second largest state-owned port in India by throughput volume, handling 132.3 million tonnes (mt) of cargo in FY24. On the other hand, Mormugao Port Authority handled 20.62 mt in the same period. Kumar’s new role as chairman of the Deendayal Port Authority marks a continuation of his leadership in the port sector.
Vinod Kumar’s appointment as chairman signifies a period of transition for the Deendayal Port Authority, as it navigates through changing leadership and operational responsibilities. With experience in leading the Mormugao Port Authority, Kumar is poised to bring his expertise to the Deendayal Port Authority and drive its growth and efficiency. As one of the major ports in India, the Deendayal Port Authority plays a crucial role in the country’s maritime operations, and Kumar’s leadership will be pivotal in shaping its future.
