Wärtsilä, a technology group, is expanding its portfolio of methanol engines with the addition of four new engines, making it the industry leader in offering a wide range of methanol engines. Methanol is seen as a primary alternative fuel for the shipping industry to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and Wärtsilä’s expansion of its methanol engine portfolio reflects its commitment to supporting the industry’s transformation to more sustainable operations.

The use of ‘green’ methanol, which can be produced using renewable energy sources and carbon capture technology, makes it a sustainable and carbon-neutral option for the shipping industry. Wärtsilä is also developing methanol retrofit capabilities for its existing diesel engine portfolio, allowing for the integration of methanol fuel into a wide range of vessel types across the marine industry.

Wärtsilä’s President of Marine Power, Roger Holm, emphasized the company’s innovative approach to supporting sustainable operations, while Stefan Nysjö, Vice President of Power Supply, highlighted the importance of providing ship owners with maximum flexibility and operational options. The four new methanol engines will be available for deliveries at different points from 2025 onwards, further solidifying Wärtsilä’s commitment to the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts.
