The global shipping industry is responsible for three percent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, prompting shipping giants to collaborate on eco-friendly solutions. Yara Marine Technologies has developed BAR Tech WindWings, which are large wing sails that can be fitted onto cargo ship decks to capture and utilize wind energy. The Pyxis Ocean, a 123-foot-tall vessel managed by Mitsubishi Corporation and chartered by Cargill, recently set sail for its first commercial voyage equipped with two WindWings. This marks the first time that cutting-edge wind propulsion techniques have been used in commercial shipping. The aim is to reduce emissions and promote a greener future in the maritime industry.

The WindWings technology is part of a wider effort to address the environmental impact of the shipping industry. By harnessing wind energy, the industry can reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and lower its carbon footprint. The Pyxis Ocean’s voyage will test the effectiveness of the WindWings in real-world conditions, with the hope of encouraging other shipping companies to adopt similar eco-friendly technologies. This development is a significant step towards a more sustainable shipping industry and demonstrates the potential for innovation and collaboration to drive positive change in the fight against climate change.
