WinGD has introduced a new option for its X-DF-A ammonia-fuelled engines, allowing them to also run on liquified petroleum gas (LPG). This ‘pre-fit’ solution is aimed at vessels being constructed for the expected global trade in ammonia, which will also have the capability to transport LPG. Named X-DF-P, after LPG’s primary component propane, this solution will be available for engine deliveries starting in 2027. This timing aligns with when operators will be considering the balance between LPG and ammonia trades in detail. The engine, originally designed for ammonia fuel, can be easily modified to run on LPG efficiently and reliably.

The X-DF-P engine is optimized for ammonia fuel but can also run on LPG with minor modifications. This flexibility allows for a smooth transition to ammonia fuel at a later date. The engine sizes currently in development are suitable for vessels typically involved in relevant trades, such as 52- and 62-bore engines. This development is significant for vessels involved in the transportation of both ammonia and LPG, providing them with a versatile and efficient engine option.

Overall, WinGD’s introduction of the X-DF-P engine option offers a practical solution for vessels involved in the global trade of ammonia and LPG. By providing engines capable of running on both fuels, operators can adapt to changing market demands and fuel availability. This innovation aligns with the industry’s shift towards cleaner fuels and sustainable practices, ensuring that vessels can operate efficiently and meet environmental regulations.
