The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) organized a workshop focused on shipbuilding and ship repair, bringing together key maritime industry stakeholders to discuss critical issues, share best practices, and promote innovation. Participants shared insights into cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices to increase efficiency in the ship repair and shipbuilding sectors. Shri TK Ramchandran, IAS Secretary, emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening the maritime sector and promoting an enabling environment for growth and development of the shipbuilding and ship repair industry.
The workshop was divided into two sessions, with the morning sessions focusing on shipbuilding and the afternoon session on ship repair. Topics included the state of the shipbuilding market in India, global shipbuilding trends, and specific targets outlined in the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. Discussions also revolved around possible solutions for India to become a global leader in ship repair, as well as initiatives taken up by the Indian government to enable India to take a leadership role in the global shipbuilding market.
The workshop offered a unique opportunity for participants to exchange ideas, form partnerships, and explore collaboration opportunities. International participants with expertise in the industry, from countries such as South Korea, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates, also took part in the discussions, allowing for the sharing of various international practices and insights. Multiple potential initiatives were discussed, including long-term clarity from the government, the need for infrastructure development, and transitioning to a green ecosystem. The discussions held at the workshop have the potential to channel the efforts of the Government of India to make India a global leader in shipbuilding and ship repair.
