CMA CGM acquires new LNG-powered feeder vessel

The French company CMA CGM has introduced the first of ten 2,000 TEU container ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This initiative aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions, with the new ships emitting 20% less CO2 compared to conventional fuel-powered ships of similar size. The innovative design also includes features to enhance aerodynamic performance and cargo capacity. These ships are part of CMA CGM’s fleet renewal program, as the company has invested over $15 billion in moving towards its goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Additionally, by using LNG as a marine fuel, the ships can reduce sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate matter emissions. The new container ships are scheduled for delivery between February 2024 and January 2025 and are expected to provide a more energy-efficient alternative to road transport in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
