Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) has successfully delivered the HOS Rocinante, a pioneering U.S.-flagged Service Operation Vessel for Hornbeck Offshore Services. This next-generation vessel, converted from an offshore supply vessel, features advanced capabilities for offshore wind and petro-energy sectors, including enhanced dynamic positioning and a motion-compensated gangway for safe personnel transfer.
Drydocks World has successfully converted the EMEM Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit for Nigeria’s Okwok field. Originally a double-hulled tanker, it received extensive upgrades, including 19 topside modules. Capable of processing 70,000 barrels daily, the FPSO is set to enhance Nigeria’s oil production by early 2026.
A recent project by the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center focused on converting Kamsarmax bulk carriers to dual-fuel methanol operations. The project aimed to assess the feasibility of retrofitting fuel oil-powered vessels to run on methanol, with Approval in Principle from Japan’s ClassNK. It highlights the potential for low-emission solutions in the maritime industry.
Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded a project to convert the MF Hamlet ferry to operate emission-free on battery power. The upgrade includes large battery packs and new motors for the azimuth thrusters. Objectives include achieving zero emissions, full electric operation, and mechanical propulsion redundancy. The project is set to begin in November 2025.
Japan’s NYK, in collaboration with IHI Power Systems, has converted a tugboat in Tokyo Bay to run on ammonia-fueled propulsion, a first for commercial vessels. The project, starting four years ago, has been approved by ClassNK. The tugboat Sakigake, originally LNG-fueled, now serves as a proof of concept for alternative fuel operations.
The largest conversion project of conventional RoRo ferries into plug-in hybrid ferries is set to begin in the second half of 2025. Scandlines in Denmark, partnering with Wärtsilä, will convert two 27-year-old vessels to hybrid operations, enabling them to conduct 80 percent of their voyages by battery power.
