Lloyd’s Register, Shell, and GTT have launched a Joint Development Project to design a 200,000m³ LNG carrier featuring hybrid-electric propulsion and GTT’s NEXT1 technology. The initiative aims to enhance LNG carrier efficiency, ensure safety in propulsion systems, and evaluate commercial viability, paving the way for sustainable shipping solutions.
At Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, Lloyd’s Register partnered with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to advance LNG carrier designs featuring hybrid electric propulsion. They signed an Approval in Principle for a 185,000 cbm LNG carrier, focusing on safety, system architecture, and battery integration for sustainable maritime solutions.
The ABS has awarded a product design assessment to Fleetzero for its Leviathan™ Battery Energy Storage System, the first U.S.-manufactured lithium iron phosphate marine battery to receive classification approval. This marks a key step towards verifying its suitability for marine applications and supporting future projects demanding certified battery technology.
