Collaborative Effort Advances Hybrid-Electric Propulsion in LNG Shipping

Lloyd’s Register (LR), Shell, and GTT have initiated a Joint Development Project (JDP) aimed at creating a conceptual design for a 200,000m³ LNG carrier. This innovative vessel will incorporate hybrid-electric propulsion alongside GTT’s NEXT1 cargo containment technology. The collaboration seeks to enhance the efficiency and capacity of LNG carriers, allowing them to adapt to the evolving demands of the industry.

The JDP will focus on developing and verifying the safety of the hybrid-electric propulsion system, examining aspects such as system architecture, redundancy strategies, and battery integration. Additionally, the project will analyze the commercial viability of the vessel through a total cost of ownership (TCO) model. The integration of GTT NEXT1 cargo containment technology will also be evaluated to ensure it aligns with the overall vessel design.

Furthermore, the initiative aims to establish technical requirements and guidelines for the application of hybrid-electric propulsion in LNG carriers. This effort is intended to bolster the understanding and implementation of this technology, paving the way for more advanced and sustainable shipping solutions in the future. Through this collaboration, the partners aspire to redefine the standards and capabilities of LNG transportation.
