A consortium led by the University of Vaasa has secured Horizon Europe funding for the H4PERION project, which aims to demonstrate hydrogen-capable internal combustion engines in large vessels. Over four years, the project will innovate in engine development, fuel supply systems, and emissions reduction, targeting efficient, zero-carbon shipping solutions.

Yanmar Power Solutions has secured a testing site in Amagasaki City, Japan, for marine hydrogen engines. This strategic move aims to advance powertrains compatible with hydrogen, methanol, and ammonia. Operations are set to begin in March 2029, reinforcing Yanmar’s commitment to sustainable marine technology and innovation in eco-friendly power solutions.

Yanmar Power Technology recently completed a successful land-based demonstration test of a pilot-ignition hydrogen 4-stroke high-speed engine for coastal vessels. The engine achieved the world’s highest hydrogen fuel ratio and produced 500kW output. Yanmar is also developing zero-emission engines using biofuel and spark-ignition technology. The project is part of zero emission ship demonstration experiment.
