Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will inaugurate the revamped MMCT 2.0 campus of Mangalore Marine College on November 13. As Karnataka’s only marine college recognized by the Directorate General of Shipping, it offers advanced training facilities, including a Ship-in-Campus module and state-of-the-art simulators, to prepare students for maritime careers.
Karnataka’s Maritime and Waterways Masterplan aims to attract ₹23,000 crore through 125 projects, focusing on coastal districts Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada. The Mangaluru Water Metro project has gained approval from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, connecting Bajal to Maravoor via the Netravati and Gurupura rivers. The Karnataka Maritime Board is planning to build the Mangaluru International Cruise and Tourism Port at Someshwar, with a draft of 18 meters. It will be the largest cruise port in India, with railway track connectivity and international interest. A maritime museum in Mangaluru and waterdrome projects in four locations are also in the works.
Ship building activity in coastal Karnataka has surged with UCSL launching the first of six 3800 TDW dry cargo vessels for Wilson ASA of Norway. Scheduled for delivery in February 2025, followed by five more vessels and eight 6300 TDW dry cargo vessels. UCSL also has orders for constructing Bollard Pull ASD tugs.
The Governor of Karnataka, Thaawarchand Gehlot, praised the Indian Coast Guard for their crucial role in safeguarding maritime borders.
