The Liberia Maritime Authority has launched a concentrated inspection campaign on fire safety, life-saving appliances and crew emergency preparedness. Masters and Chief Engineers of Liberian-flagged ships must complete a 26-item self-assessment before flag State inspections, and inspectors will test equipment and crew knowledge, not just paperwork.
BIMCO’s Tanker Safety Network has warned that known machinery defects, weak maintenance and postponed repairs can lead to serious engine-room fires. Reviewing three real incidents, members said spare-part shortages, short repair windows and schedule pressure often push engineers to delay fixing problems they have already found.
The Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum has issued fire drill guidelines for car carriers, ro-ro and ro-pax ships. Six realistic scenarios at sea and in port, plus tabletop exercises, aim to move crews from reading guidance to practising it, with fixed firefighting systems released within 15 minutes of the first alarm.
