Nearly a year after the MSC containership MSC Baltic III grounded in Newfoundland, salvage companies are competing to remove the wreck. Cleanup efforts faced delays due to winter weather, and proposals for removal are under review. The Canadian Coast Guard is monitoring the situation, with actual removal expected to begin in spring.
Severe weather has worsened the damage to the MSC Baltic III, now grounded in Cedar Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador. The hull shows significant new damage, with increased plate buckling and the stern lower in the water. Cleanup efforts are underway as oiled debris rises along the shore following the storm.
After months of work, salvors have successfully removed most of the bunker fuel from the grounded MSC Baltic III, significantly reducing pollution risks along Newfoundland’s coast. Utilizing calmer summer weather, the team transferred over 1,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil for safe disposal, while facing challenges from the vessel’s remote location and severe damage.
The Canadian Coast Guard reports progress in the salvage operation for the grounded containership MSC Baltic III, stranded since February 15. Improved weather has facilitated container removal, with 115 containers taken off so far. Approximately half of the heavy fuel onboard has also been safely extracted to prevent pollution.
