A coal carrier operated by Japan’s Iino Lines and J-Power completed its first voyage with a rotor sail from Norsepower, showcasing the industry’s commitment to reducing emissions. The rotor sail on the bulker Yodohmie is a pioneering move in utilizing innovative technologies to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Mitsui OSK Lines, Ltd. and Vale International SA have completed the retrofit of a 200,000 ton class bulk carrier with Norsepower Rotor Sails, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. This innovative technology utilizes the Magnus effect to generate thrust, aligning with MOL’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and Vale’s commitment to reducing Scope 3 emissions.
Wind propulsion specialist Norsepower Oy Ltd has secured its largest order to date for its Rotor Sail™ technology. French shipowner Louis Dreyfus Armateurs SAS (LDA) has ordered the technology for three low-emission roll-on/roll-off ships, which will transport aircraft assembly components for Airbus from Europe to the United States.
Oldendorff and Norsepower will install three Rotor Sails on board a bulk carrier to reduce emissions. The ship, Dietrich Oldendorf, will be equipped with the sails by mid-2024 for a North Pacific trade route. The sails use wind power and have already reduced CO2 emissions by over 21,000 tonnes.
