Women from 19 Latin American countries gathered in Guayaquil, Ecuador, from November 17-19 for a workshop focused on enhancing gender-responsive maritime policies. Supported by the IMO’s Women in Maritime Gender Programme, discussions aimed to strengthen governance, increase women’s roles, and promote gender equality in the maritime sector, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 5.
Women constitute only 29% of the global marine workforce, often relegated to support roles with limited advancement opportunities. Daughters of the Deep seeks to change this by providing scholarships, training, and job placements. Their initiatives empower women like Esthereena Tonga, a passionate marine conservationist, to thrive in the industry.
DFDS, the Danish operator taking over Jersey’s ferry services, launched Waves of Talent to increase female representation in maritime roles. With women at 2% in deck and engine positions, the program provides hands-on training for female students. Success in Turkey and Morocco shows progress, with a goal to reach 20% by 2030.
The recent survey on disparities within the seafarer community revealed alarming rates of psychological and sexual harassment among women and LGBTQ+ members. The lack of DEI training for senior ranks was also identified as a concern. Despite challenges, there were positive aspects, highlighting the need for a more inclusive maritime industry.
