Cemre Shipyard recently unveiled the world’s first e-methanol-fueled service operation vessel (SOV), NB1094. The launch ceremony drew a large crowd of excited families and friends eager to witness this groundbreaking achievement. This innovative vessel, designed by Esvagt, has the potential to revolutionize the offshore wind service industry by accelerating the transition to carbon-neutral and environmentally friendly solutions.
Powered by batteries, dual-fuel, and pure methanol engines, the NB1094 SOV can operate on renewable e-methanol derived from wind energy and biogenic carbon. This technology is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 4,500 tonnes per year, setting a new standard for green vessels in the maritime sector. Measuring 93 meters in length, the vessel features high-standard accommodations for 124 people, an 8-meter depth, and a width of 19.6 meters, ensuring crew comfort and safety.
Once commissioned later in 2024, the NB1094 will begin operations at Hornsea 2, the world’s largest offshore wind farm located off the Yorkshire coast in the North Sea. Ørsted, a leading renewable energy company, plans to supply e-methanol for the vessel, showcasing their commitment to green fuel alternatives. The launch of the NB1094 marks the beginning of a new era in maritime operations, with plans for a second methanol-powered SOV already in the works for 2026.
