Korean Register, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, BAR Technologies, and the Liberian Registry are collaborating on a project to explore the implementation of large wing sails on modern LNG carriers. The initiative was formalized with a memorandum of understanding during Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, aimed at developing a 174,000 cubic-meter LNG carrier featuring BAR Technologies’ WindWings system for wind-assisted propulsion.
This study aims to evaluate the technical feasibility, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance necessary for integrating rigid wing sails into LNG carriers. The innovative design proposed by HD Hyundai includes a forward-accommodation layout that optimizes deck space for the WindWings installation, enhancing the vessel’s efficiency and reducing reliance on the main engine.
BAR Technologies’ WindWings are substantial rigid sails that harness wind energy to assist propulsion, resulting in decreased fuel consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions. With existing applications already saving substantial CO2 emissions on bulkers and tankers, the project seeks to incorporate this technology into next-generation gas carriers, offering a sustainable solution for shipowners amid strict emissions regulations.
Executives from the involved companies emphasized the importance of this project in achieving environmental advancements in shipbuilding. By collaborating closely throughout the design process, the parties aim to ensure the safe and effective adoption of innovative technologies that can significantly contribute to the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts.
