DP World, a global port operator, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) to develop a new port in Vadhvan, India. Vadhvan, located on the Arabian Coast north of Mumbai, offers an ideal location for a harbor with a natural draft of 20 meters. Its proximity to Mumbai and Gujarat, along with established connectivity to northern and central India via the national rail network and NH8, make it an attractive commercial gateway to the region. The MoU with DP World is expected to make the development of Vadhvan Port a reality.

Shri Sanjay Sethi, Chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, expressed his pleasure in signing the MoU with DP World, noting that the company has been a strong partner for the past two and a half decades. He is confident that DP World’s support will contribute significantly to the development of Vadhvan Port.

Jibu K. Itty, CEO of DP World Nhava Sheva, also commented on the MoU, stating that the relationship with JNPA is based on trust and a shared vision to enable trade. DP World believes that the proposed site in Vadhvan has the necessary features to transform it into a great port that will bring prosperity to the region. Currently, DP World operates five container terminals in India, with a total capacity of around 6 million TEU. The company is also developing a new greenfield terminal at Tuna-Tekra, which will increase its total capacity in India to 8.19 million TEU once operational.

Overall, the MoU between DP World and JNPA signifies their commitment to developing Vadhvan Port and exploring trade opportunities in the region. With its strategic location and strong connectivity, Vadhvan has the potential to become a major commercial gateway in India’s western coast.
