The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is set to receive funding for various projects aimed at improving ferry services in the state. One project involves installing system-wide wireless connectivity on ferry vessels to provide internet access between ports, enhancing the travel experience for customers and improving operational efficiency. Another project includes building a new ferry to replace a 60-year-old vessel in rural southwest Alaska, featuring a diesel-electric propulsion system to improve service, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and maintain a vital transit lifeline. Additionally, funding will be used to enhance operations on the Alaska Marine Highway System, serving more than 30 communities with limited transportation options, adding service to remote areas and improving the quality of passenger ferry service.
In California, the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District will receive funding to purchase a new low-emission ferry to replace an older vessel, reducing emissions, enhancing service, and relieving congestion on Bay-area roads. The San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) will also receive funding to build two new electric ferry vessels, providing emission-free service between downtown San Francisco, Treasure Island, and Mission Bay, reducing congestion and offering a clean and reliable transportation option for growing neighborhoods with limited street access. In Delaware, the Delaware River Bay Authority will use funding to purchase a new diesel-hybrid ferry, improving the sustainability of daily transit services on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry route.
In other states, similar projects are underway to improve ferry services and infrastructure, including the purchase of new electric vessels, the modernization of ferry terminals, and the implementation of charging stations for hybrid vessels. These initiatives aim to enhance service, reliability, and passenger safety, while also promoting environmental sustainability and reducing emissions. The funding provided will support the development of efficient and sustainable ferry systems, benefiting both residents and visitors in these regions.
