The Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) recently urged shipping companies to prioritize the protection of seafarers’ rights, particularly emphasizing the need for thorough investigations into incidents such as deaths at sea. The Commissioner of NRI Affairs, Adv Narendra Sawaikar, reassured the seafarers community gathered in Margao to celebrate ‘Seafarers Day’ and pledged robust support to address their concerns effectively. Sawaikar encouraged the new generation to embrace the challenges of the seafaring profession, acknowledging the significant contributions seafarers make to world trade and the global economy despite the challenges they face at sea.
Speaking as a guest of honor at the event, Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa pledged to advocate for the concerns of seafarers in the upcoming Assembly session. He emphasized the paramount importance of seafarers’ safety while navigating the oceans and called on every seaman to prioritize and adhere to stringent safety measures. Frank Viegas, President of GSAI, stressed the safety of seafarers and spoke about the increasing incidents of piracy and drone attacks, highlighting that safety at sea requires vigilance, knowledge, and proactive measures. Several Goan seafarers were felicitated at the function, including chefs and chief cooks, for their contributions to the maritime community.
