The maritime education and training sector is undergoing significant changes, with Lloyd’s Register acquiring Ocean Technologies Group and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) launching its ICS Academy. This new platform offers practical e-learning courses to help shipping companies ensure best practices and regulatory compliance on board. The courses on the ICS Academy are designed to complement ICS Publications, providing crew members with access to on board procedures and training that seamlessly integrate with their work.
According to Guy Platten, Secretary General of ICS, the launch of the ICS Academy fills a gap in the market for e-learning solutions. The platform offers globally applicable courses for all ship types, regularly updated to meet the evolving needs of the shipping industry. The interactive content of the courses allows seafarers to apply practical guidance to real-life scenarios on board, with a user-friendly management system that enables training managers to monitor learners’ progress and for seafarers to easily complete e-learning within the ICS Academy.
The first course available on the ICS Academy is ‘Helicopter Operation Procedures for Ships’, aligning with the industry standard ICS publication ‘Guide to Helicopter/Ship Operations’. Additional courses on ‘Operating the Engine Under Low Loads’ and ‘Preparing for Inspections in the Engine Room’ will be launched later this year, supporting the ICS publication ‘Engine Room Procedures Guide’. All ICS Publications are available in both print and digital formats, providing comprehensive resources for maritime professionals.
