Seafarers working for ferry operator Stena Line have achieved a significant pay increase of nearly 25%, effective from September 1. The wage hikes, negotiated by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), apply to various roles within the deck and technical departments. Specifically, bosuns will see a 24% increase, assistant bosuns 20%, able seamen 17%, hotel repairmen 20%, and engine watch ratings will receive raises ranging from 8% to 17%.
A spokesperson for Stena Line confirmed that updated salary scales will be implemented for employees at Stena Line PTE and Stena Line International PTE, following a thorough review of pay structures. This review aimed to ensure that compensation remains fair and competitive in light of current market conditions. The company took into account employee feedback, industry trends, and the broader challenges of recruitment and retention in the maritime sector.
Eddie Dempsey, general secretary of RMT, commended the union’s maritime officials for their efforts in engaging with Stena Line regarding skill retention and the long-term job security of UK ratings. He acknowledged the hard work of RMT representatives and emphasized that Stena Line’s commitment to quality employment for UK seafarers is crucial for attracting and retaining talent in a competitive labor market.
