MAN Energy Solutions has partnered with Alfa Laval to develop a methanol fuel-supply solution for MAN four-stroke engines and its fuel-injection technology. This agreement will allow for the retrofitting of the first four-stroke engine types to methanol operation by 2025. MAN Energy Solutions and Alfa Laval have previously collaborated on decarbonising shipping in 2014, resulting in the only methanol solution for two-stroke marine engines currently in use at sea.
Alfa Laval will provide the low-flashpoint fuel-supply system (LFSS), control system, fuel-valve train, and auxiliary functions for the project, drawing on its experience from over 70 methanol projects. The company will design and build a prototype at its facility in Italy before delivering it for testing on a methanol engine at MAN Energy Solutions facilities in Germany in early 2024. This partnership aims to support the maritime fleet in decarbonising by enabling the switch to low-carbon fuel and making methanol-running possible for four-stroke engines.
Both companies expressed confidence in the partnership, with Alfa Laval’s Head of Marine Separation & Fuel Supply Systems, Viktor Friberg, stating their support for all types of customers at all stages of the fuel transition, while MAN Energy Solutions’ Head of Retrofit & Upgrades, Bernd Siebert, emphasized the importance of enabling the switch to low-carbon fuel.
