The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department have signed an MoU to establish the UP Inland Waterways Authority, aiming to develop and regulate inland waterways in Uttar Pradesh to improve transport efficiency and promote economic growth. The IRS will assist in establishing the authority, develop rules based on relevant acts, provide technical support, and ensure implementation of safety and environmental initiatives. This partnership aims to enhance skills and capacity building while contributing towards sustainable development and efficient use of Uttar Pradesh’s inland waterways.
The collaboration will leverage Uttar Pradesh’s river network to enable smooth movement of goods and people, improve connectivity, and boost regional development, aligning with the vision of environmental protection and economic growth. Transport Commissioner Shri Chandra Bhushan Singh expressed gratitude for the continued support, emphasizing the potential economic benefits and environment-friendly transportation options provided by the Authority. The initiative also aims to enhance pilgrim tourism and contribute to river conservation, pollution prevention, and the overall improvement of residents’ quality of life.
Senior officials from IRS, including Shri. Amit Bhatnagar and Shri. Devrup Kabi, assured full support and expertise to the Transport Commissioner and Department for the success of the UP Inland Waterways Authority. The MoU signing ceremony was attended by eminent officials from both parties, highlighting the commitment to providing state-of-the-art technical support and services to ensure the Authority’s success.
