Havila Voyages is set to launch a climate-neutral round trip along the Norwegian coast, covering over 5,000 nautical miles. The company, which already operates four LNG-fueled cruise ships with battery support, is currently in the planning phase to test this voyage this fall. CEO Bent Martini stated they are working with suppliers to secure enough biogas to fuel the journey entirely with renewable energy.

The proposed route will run from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, demonstrating that it’s possible to complete the Coastal Route climate-neutrally. Havila’s ships, designed for energy efficiency, can carry up to 650 passengers and are equipped with a 6.1 megawatt-hour battery pack, enabling them to operate emission-free for up to four hours.

Martini emphasized the need for consistent environmental regulations to encourage investment in green technologies within the maritime industry. He urged policymakers to prioritize climate neutrality in future contracts, asserting that current technology can meet stricter environmental standards.

Norway will implement zero-emission regulations for coastal shipping starting January 1, 2026, beginning with smaller vessels. By 2032, all Norwegian shipping must operate with zero emissions in historic fjords and coastal routes, marking a significant shift toward sustainable maritime practices.
