Stena Line has announced the closure of its ferry route between Halmstad, Sweden, and Grenaa, Denmark, with the last operations scheduled for April 30, 2026. The ferry, Stena Nautica, will continue to serve this route until the closure date.
CEO Niclas Mårtensson explained that the decision stems from ongoing profitability challenges. By reallocating resources to more in-demand routes, Stena Line aims to enhance commercial transport and passenger services while strengthening its overall network resilience. He emphasized the necessity of this decision for the long-term viability of the company.
The discontinuation is attributed to strong competition from fixed bridge connections in Denmark, a strained cost environment, and unfavorable market conditions amid global economic uncertainty. Stena Line has operated the Halmstad–Grenaa route since 2020, having relocated it from Varberg due to new development plans at the Port of Varberg.
Despite this closure, Stena Line’s Swedish ferry network will remain robust, featuring six routes and 12 vessels, including the introduction of a new route from Umeå to Vaasa in February 2026, following the acquisition of Wasaline.
