India Unveils ₹10,000 Crore Plan to Boost Container Manufacturing
India is set to bolster its shipping container manufacturing sector with ₹10,000 crore allocated over five years in the Union Budget 2026. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on imported containers, a vulnerability highlighted during the pandemic, and to align domestic output with the surging demand for containerised cargo. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized container manufacturing as a strategic sector for enhancing India’s domestic capabilities.
Currently, Indian-made containers are 30-40% more expensive than those from China, mainly due to higher material costs and fewer production facilities. Industry experts believe that targeted budget support could help bridge this cost gap. Hasmukh Viradiya of APPL Containers Ltd suggested that the funds should be used as a per-container subsidy rather than for setting up new units or providing interest subsidies.
The planned assistance scheme aims to achieve an annual capacity of about 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units over the next decade, potentially creating a market value of approximately ₹80,000 crore. This initiative could generate direct employment for 3,000 people and nearly 50,000 indirect jobs in the logistics sector. Major players like MSC, Maersk, and Adani are expected to explore investments in response to this supportive policy.
